A deeper fill with dry on the surface which will restrict the rest of it drying. Reason I like the stuff is that it's more or less as permanent as plaster. I then squirt the toupret in to the gap. Smooth if off with a filling knife and then wait for it to shrink back. It is like caulk with tiny fibres, it will shrink back a lot.
