I have, and use, a splitter to with both the microphone plug and actual headphones plug plugged into it, and that into the (only) audio jack on my computer, and even the USB cable on it plugged in.

However, that said, the 3.5mm ports on many laptops just don't work well with things like splitters, etc. The ports seem to be getting more cheaply made.
