They will not moved their own and start to randomly despawn if further than 32 blocks. There is a mob cap, so if there are unlit caves or other areas (surface level at night or unlit parts of base) then mobs could generate there and use up a spot in the cap. Lighting up those areas will improve performance.
Web5 comments. They don't normally spawn on leaf blocks, but as part of world generation they may spawn either trapped in leaves or hoisted to the top. I haven't seen anyone complaining about a change to this in the snapshots. There may be some exceptions with things like the Wandering Trader villager which seems to arrive anywhere and everywhere.
